Disparu en 1981, à l'âge de 51 ans, Xavier Grall fut journaliste, poète, romancier. Mal édité, mal lu, on le range volontiers dans la catégorie des poètes à tirage limité. Il a pourtant marqué toute une génération qui se reconnaît dans ses textes et dans sa célébration de la terre bretonne. Chroniqueur et billetiste à la Vie catholique puis au Monde, son talent s'est exercé jusque dans la feuilletonisation de sa vie familiale. L'admirateur de Rimbaud était aussi le père de cinq filles à qui il n'a cessé d'écrire. Son itinéraire fait écho aux questions que se sont posées nombre de bretons qui ont eu vingt ans au lendemain de la libération : rester, partir, revenir. Plus que d'autres, il a porté l'appel à vivre et travailler au pays. Un appel romantique et quelquefois désespéré. Près de trente ans après sa disparition, j'ai voulu, dans ce film, tenter de comprendre qui il était : un journaliste, un poète mais aussi un mari, un père, un homme travaillé par une recherche mystique et par le désir de voir renaître la Bretagne. J'ai fait appel au témoignage d'Alain Rémond, lui aussi chroniqueur ( La Croix, Marianne) et romancier qui a été, comme moi, marqué par la force de son écriture. Ce film doit beaucoup à la participation de ses filles et de Françoise, sa femme. Elles y évoquent la part intime du père et du mari.
